What Conditions and Symptoms Can CBD Creams Treat?
Before I get into the specific details on how to use CBD creams, let’s take a look at some of the general benefits of these products and what they can be used for.
CBD is arguably one of the most well-known cannabinoids alongside THC, the main psychoactive chemical in cannabis.
Thanks to new research into the therapeutic potential of hemp and cannabis, we’re starting to get a better understanding of the chemicals inside these plants and how they affect our bodies.
We know, for example, that the endocannabinoid system is involved in managing pain and inflammation, anxiety/stress, metabolism, appetite and eating behavior, and much more.
By stimulating the endocannabinoid system, CBD can have a wide variety of beneficial effects.
The fact that CBD creams can activate this system in a very localized manner means they have unique benefits and uses that you might not get from other CBD products.
Right now, there are generally 2 main conditions/symptoms people aim to treat using topical CBD products like creams:
- Inflammation and Pain: CBD is a really powerful anti-inflammatory. Studies show that CBD can help slow down your body’s inflammatory processes and reduce the pain caused by chronic inflammatory conditions. Best of all, it can do so without any of the harsh side-effects associated with regular anti-inflammatories and painkillers. Read my post on CBD creams for pain and inflammation for more information.
- Skin Conditions: Studies have shown that topically applied cannabinoids can directly stimulate the endocannabinoid system in the skin. This can have a wide variety of benefits and help regulate skin health as well as treat skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, allergic reactions, eczema, and much more. This is one of the main reasons I started using CBD. Read more about the benefits of CBD for skin health here.
CBD is also a powerful anxiolytic.
That’s because the endocannabinoid system plays a key role in mediating our emotions as well as our response to stressful or potentially threatening stimuli.
Thanks to the solid body of research into CBD as an anxiolytic, more and more people are using it as an alternative to anti-depressants and anxiolytics, many of which produce serious side-effects.
I actually use CBD for anxiety and stress myself.
However, I prefer CBD oils and gummies for treating anxiety and stress, while I stick to creams for localized, physical symptoms.
What Makes CBD Creams Different from Other CBD Products?
You’ve probably seen the wide variety of CBD products out there.
So, what makes CBD creams stand out from other CBD products, like oils, for example?
One of the main benefits of CBD creams and other topicals is that they offer localized relief.
When trying to treat pain or inflammation, for example, CBD creams can be applied directly to the area where they’re needed most.
The same goes for skin conditions like acne, eczema, or psoriasis.
CBD creams can be applied directly to a rash or blemish and get to work relieving your symptoms straight away.
Another reason you may choose CBD creams or topicals over another type of CBD product is that they offer really fast-acting relief.
When you ingest CBD in the form of a gummy, for example, it first needs to pass through the digestive system before reaching the bloodstream.
The same goes for CBD oils, although you can usually speed up their effects by applying them under the tongue where they can be absorbed directly.
My dad, for example, uses CBD creams exactly for exactly these reasons.
A few years ago, Dad was diagnosed with arthritis in his knee.
At first, his symptoms were fairly manageable.
However, they soon got worse, and his doctor soon suggested looking into prescription painkillers and anti-inflammatories in order to give Dad some relief from the chronic swelling and pain in his knee.
As I’m sure you know, prescription painkillers and anti-inflammatories can have some serious side effects, so I was keen to look into alternative treatments first.
That’s when I learned about CBD.
Ever since I bought Dad his first anti-inflammatory CBD cream, we’ve never looked back.
Even today, CBD creams are Dad’s go-to solution for treating the chronic inflammation and pain in his knee.
How to Apply CBD Creams and Topicals:
CBD creams are really simple to use.
Unlike oils or gummies, the CBD from topical products does not enter the bloodstream.
Hence, these products do not need to be dosed as carefully and can be applied fairly liberally based on your needs and the severity of your symptoms.
Nonetheless, there are some ways you can ensure you get the best results using CBD topicals.
Below are some general guidelines to help get you started using CBD creams and other topicals:
First, Test for an Allergic Reaction
This is really important:
Regardless of what CBD cream you use, always make sure to test it on a small spot of your skin first to rule out the possibility of it causing an allergic reaction.
While CBD isn’t known to cause allergic reactions, some of the other ingredients in CBD creams can.
Before you buy a specific cream, make sure to read through its list of ingredients and look out for any specific ingredient you know you’re allergic to.
Once you’re sure you’re not allergic to any specific ingredient in the cream, try to spot-test a small amount of it on your skin and gauge your reaction.
Once you’re happy with how your body reacts, move on to the next step.
If you notice any unwanted reactions, make sure to stop using the product immediately.
Next, Identify and Clean the Affected Area
As I mentioned earlier, CBD creams offer localized relief.
That means they should be applied directly to the part of the body where they’re needed.
Some common areas people use CBD creams on include the neck, back, shoulders, calves, and joints, but they can be applied to virtually to any external part of the body.
Once you’ve identified where to apply the cream, make sure to clean the area and gently dry it with a towel.
Apply the Cream and Rub it Into the Skin
Remember, CBD creams don’t need to be dosed as diligently as oils or edibles
A good rule-of-thumb is to use roughly 1 fingertip-full of topical and rub it gently into the affected area like you would a moisturizer.
Once you’ve applied the topical, it’s time to sit back and let it work.
Make sure to gauge your reaction to the product and reapply it when necessary.
For best results, it can help to cover the affected area with a bandage.
Some people (my Dad included) also find CBD creams are best applied just before bed so they can work overnight.
Note: Always read the package instructions
Every CBD product is different.
The instructions I gave above are general and should help you get started using a wide variety of CBD topicals, including creams, balms, and lotions.
However, always make sure you read the instructions that came with your particular product in order to get the best results possible.
